OUR PROCESS
What Happens When We Refinish Your Jewelry?
We begin by inspecting your jewelry, including the stones and settings, to determine the best approach for polishing or plating.
Your jewelry is then carefully polished to remove surface scratches and restore shine. If rhodium plating is needed for white gold, we apply a fresh layer to restore its bright white finish.
Before it leaves our shop, we inspect the piece again to make sure it looks its best.
PRICING
How Much Does Polishing & Plating Cost?
The cost depends on the type of jewelry, metal, condition and services needed. Simple polishing is different from rhodium plating or a complete refinishing.
Bring your jewelry in and we'll take a look at it and provide a written estimate based on what's best for your piece.
POLISHING OR PLATING?
They're Not the Same Thing.
Polishing removes surface scratches and helps restore the natural shine of metal.
Rhodium plating is a thin, durable finish applied to white gold to create its bright white appearance. Over time, this finish can wear away, revealing a warmer tone underneath.
If your white gold jewelry is looking yellow or less bright, it may simply need to be replated.

Common Questions About Polishing & Plating
How often should jewelry be polished or plated?
We recommend having your jewelry professionally cleaned and inspected every six months. It's a great way to keep your pieces looking beautiful while giving our jewelers an opportunity to check for loose stones, worn prongs, or other signs of wear. Professional polishing and rhodium plating can bring new life to your jewelry, restoring its shine and brilliance while allowing us to give your piece a thorough inspection.
How do I know if my jewelry needs rhodium plating?
If your white gold jewelry is starting to look slightly yellow, dull, or uneven in color, it's probably time for fresh rhodium plating. White gold naturally has a warmer tone, and the rhodium finish that gives it that bright white appearance gradually wears away. A fresh application restores that beautiful, brilliant white finish.
Will polishing remove all scratches?
Professional polishing can remove most everyday surface scratches and restore your jewelry's shine. Deeper scratches, dents, or significant wear may require additional refinishing or repair. We'll evaluate your piece and recommend the best approach to restore its appearance while preserving the integrity of the metal.
Can all white gold jewelry be rhodium plated?
Most white gold jewelry can be rhodium plated to restore its bright white finish. The process begins with professionally polishing the metal to remove surface scratches and restore its shine, just as we would with yellow gold or platinum. White gold then receives an additional step: a fresh layer of rhodium plating that gives it that beautiful, bright white appearance. Certain gemstones or finishes may require special care during the process.
How long does rhodium plating last?
Rhodium plating isn't permanent, and how long it lasts depends on how frequently you wear your jewelry, your daily activities, and how much contact it has with other surfaces. Rings worn every day typically show wear sooner than earrings or necklaces. The good news? Rhodium plating can be reapplied whenever your jewelry needs a refresh.
How much does polishing and plating cost?
If your jewelry was purchased from Diamonds Rock, polishing and rhodium plating are complimentary! For jewelry purchased elsewhere, professional polishing and rhodium plating start at $118 for one piece. Pricing may vary depending on the condition of your jewelry and whether additional work is needed. We'll always provide an estimate before beginning any service.
