REBUILDING THE FOUNDATION - DONE RIGHT HERE

A Worn Shank Shouldn't Be Ignored

The bottom portion of your ring takes more abuse than you might realize. Over time, everyday wear can cause the shank to become thin, cracked, bent or even broken.

Our jewelers evaluate the amount of remaining metal, the overall condition of the ring and how it was originally constructed to determine the best way to repair or rebuild the shank.

Cracks & Breaks

A cracked or broken shank may be repairable depending on the location, metal and previous work performed on the ring.

Thin & Worn Shanks

When years of wear have significantly thinned the bottom of a ring, reinforcement or replacement may be needed.

Shank Replacement

When necessary, worn sections can be removed and rebuilt with new metal to restore strength and structure.

OUR PROCESS

How We Repair a Damaged Shank

We first inspect the entire ring - not just the visible damage - to determine how much healthy metal remains and whether previous repairs have affected the structure.

For many repairs, our jewelers use a precision laser welder to work on damaged areas with greater control and accuracy. Laser welding allows us to perform clean, detailed metal work with minimal heat exposure to surrounding areas, which is especially important when working near stone settings.

After structural work is complete, the ring is reshaped, refinished and inspected before it leaves our shop.

PRICING

How Much Does Shank Repair Cost?

Pricing depends on the metal, extent of the damage and amount of new metal required. Repairing a small damaged area is very different from rebuilding or replacing a heavily worn shank.

We'll inspect the ring and provide a written estimate before beginning the repair.

REPAIR OR REPLACE?

Sometimes a Shank Needs More Than a Patch.

When enough healthy metal remains, a localized repair may be appropriate. But when the shank has become extremely thin or has been repaired repeatedly, replacing a larger section can provide a stronger, longer-lasting solution.

Our goal isn't simply to make the damage disappear. It's to restore the structure of the ring so you can comfortably wear it again for years to come.

SHANK REPAIR FAQS

Common Questions About Shank Repair

Can a cracked ring shank be repaired?

Absolutely. Cracked ring shanks are a common repair. With both traditional torch soldering and precision laser welding available in our on-site jewelry shop, our experienced jewelers can repair most cracks efficiently and effectively. We'll evaluate the condition of your ring and determine the best technique to restore its strength and durability.

How do I know if my ring shank is too thin?

A thinning shank may feel noticeably narrow at the bottom of your ring or show signs of bending, cracking, or distortion. Because wear isn't always obvious, our jewelers can inspect the thickness and condition of your ring to determine whether reinforcement or replacement is recommended.

Will shank repair weaken my ring?

When performed properly, shank repair is intended to restore your ring's strength and structural integrity. Our jewelers carefully evaluate the existing metal and use the appropriate repair techniques to ensure your ring is secure and comfortable for everyday wear.

Can a ring shank be replaced?

Absolutely. When a shank has become excessively thin, damaged, or weakened by previous repairs, replacing the worn section may be the best long-term solution. Our jewelers can rebuild the bottom portion of your ring using new metal to restore its strength and structure.

How long does shank repair take?

Most shank repairs are completed within five business days or less, depending on the complexity of the work. For repairs needed sooner, we offer express service, often with same-day or next-day completion when possible. Express charges apply.

How much does shank repair cost?

Shank repair pricing varies depending on the width and thickness of your ring, the type of metal, the extent of the repair, and current precious metal market prices. Because every ring is different, our jewelers will evaluate your piece and provide a written estimate before any work begins.
